Note on Husband: Samuel AXTELL
b. Jan. 8, 1756, in Berkley, Mass. The Mass. record of Soldiers and Sailors
of the Revolutionary War gives Samuel as serving under Capt. Samuel Tubbs,
Col. Timothy Walker's rgt.; was at camp at Roxbury, Nov. 20, 1775; also
descriptive list of men raised to reinforce the Continental Army for a term
of 6 months, agreeable to resolve of June 5, 1780, under command of Capt.
Dix; also mentioned "payroll for 6 month men raised by town of Berkley for
service in Continental Army During 1780." In 1778 Samuel Axter is credited as
a soldier to Scituate, Mass., age 22; stature 5 ft. 8 in., complexion light."
If Axter means Axtell, this may be Samuel 5-32 but why is he credited to
Scituate instead of Berkley? After the Revolution he went to Chester, Vt.,
and settled in what was then a wilderness. He saw service in the war of 1812.
About 1785 he married Celia Dean of Taunton, Mass., who died Dec. 5, 1806.
His second wife was Martha Earl, who died Aug. 26, 1859. Samuel died July 6,
1836
