b. Dec. 3, 1845 in Tontogany, O. His father died when he was two years old and the family returned to Mercer Co., Pa. On Aug. 13, 1862, when but 16 years of age, he enlisted in Co. H. 145th Pa. Vol. (He was measured with his shoes on to make him tall enough to pass requirements). He was in numerous battles, among them Antietam, and on Aug. 5, 1864, was taken prisoner. Was in Andersonville, Libby, Belle Isle and Salisbury prison pens. His courageous spirit kept him up until on Feb. 5, 1865, while at Salisbury, he enlisted in the rebel army to escape, and deserted the following April, coming into his own division. After the war he went to Kansas and helped to drive out the Indians. Returning to Pa., he married Jane Ann Blair at Meadville on Sept. 9, 1870. He soon returned to Kansas and took up a "claim" near McPherson. Here he went through the "grasshopper year" with all the suffering and hardships of pioneer life in Kansas. In 1884, moved to Elk Co., Kansas, where he lived for 24 years, moving to Beaumont, Kansas, and making his home there until his death, June 3, 1923. His wife survived him just 27 days, dying June 30, 1923.
